A 16-year-old boy was shot in the buttocks near a playground in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx on Thursday afternoon.
The incident happened just outside an elementary school and Willis playground, where kids were playing soccer and climbing monkey bars.
The sound of kids playing was interrupted by the sound of gunshots, which were initially mistaken for firecrackers.
According to the police, the victim was rushed to Harlem Hospital and is expected to survive.
Two suspects are still at large, and investigators are searching for clues.
The NYPD recovered the gun that the suspects ditched before they fled.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with people running and ducking for cover.
This shooting comes amid a violent week for City schools, with three gang-related shootings reported in Upper Manhattan on Tuesday.
The police have increased their presence across Manhattan in response to the violence.
Residents of the Mott Haven neighborhood are alarmed by the shooting and are calling for action from the NYPD to address the issue.
